I finally found (got pointed at) an article that explained some of the basic differences between Users (software engineers) and Sysadmins. Originally published in ;login, it can be found at The Problem of PORCMOLSULB.
The author also comes up with a nifty solution to the tussle between developers and sysadmins on the root password issue. That solution, sudoscript, may be found here. Only source, Solaris package and RedHat rpms, I'm afraid, no .deb yet...
