Supposedly the "trackback" feature pings the links to in a blog post. Well, if that's the case, O'Reilly Network doesn't pay attention when they get "pinged" from blogs, and Tim O'Reilly doesn't either.
Supposedly the whole attractiveness of blogs, even when not in a community, is their ability to freely reference each other. As it stands, unless you are blogging in a content aggregating "blog community", you end up just "vanity posting" whatever you wish to (maybe) a tiny audience.
I think maybe 10 people read this blog, for example. If I had my ego wrapped up in it, I would be devastated. Fortunately, this and my other writing efforts are intended as much to develop my writing as to gain a huge audience of admiring fans. But I would have to admit that fans would help me write more regularly... ;)
